What’s in my beginner golf bag?

If you are new to the game of golf, you may not realize that a golf bag is similar to a big purse that you tote around the golf course with supplies for the game. Once you are out on the course, you can’t really go back to the clubhouse and purchase something necessary. This is why it’s important to be prepared for the game before you step on the green.

Whether you’ve recently joined a golf league or you are simply out for a round with friends, here’s some help putting together a proper golf bag.

Golf Clubs & Bag

These are going to be essential for the game. Typically, every player must have their own bag to have access to play on the green. That said, you can show up with an empty bag and share clubs with a friend if you are trying to play last minute. That, however, is not ideal and you will likely want a proper bag put together.

I decided on getting the beginner WILSON Women’s Profile SGI Complete Golf Package Set a few years ago because I thought the whole package was pretty cute and a decent price in comparison to the general market rates for a bag and 12 clubs.

Roller Cart for Golf Gag

While you can rent these from the clubhouse, I recommend purchasing your own foldable golf card that will fit in your car. I bought this Two Wheel Golf Push Cart that works well and allows you to roll your clubs around the course seamlessly. The ones that you can rent from the golf course typically are 3-4 wheels and more sturdy. If you purchase one of the higher-end rollers, I believe it will cost you at a minimum $100.

A dozen golf balls

If you are new to the game, I would get cheaper golf balls because you are likely to lose a few in a 9 or 18 hole game. Personally, I bring at least 8-10 bright pink golf balls and matte red golf balls along with me. I find I’m easily able to tell my ball apart from my golf buddies and can more easily find the ball.

Permanent Marker

If someone has the same ball as you, it is wise to mark your ball with your initials or a design that signifies it’s yours in permanent marker; this will help you tremendously.

Ball Marker

Sometimes these are given out for free by the course along with a scorecard and pencil. It’s something that looks like a poker chip. There are also ball markers that clip on hats. Basically, when everyone makes it to the green, golf etiquette is to put a ball marker where the ball is to get your ball out of the way while people are putting.

Ball Clicker or a Fancy Golf watch

Sometimes I use a clicker to tell how many strokes it takes me to complete a hole and then I document that on the scorecard. I also write down everyone’s name on the scorecard immediately so you don’t forget who’s playing with you (this is helpful when you’re in a league and the players are first come first serve).

As I played some more I downoaded the official USGA app and kept the app as the first option as I opened my screen. I’d do my best to remember my score and immediately input the score on the app as I walk to the next hole. It can be tough handling your phone as you play, however, and you may just want to stick to the score card and clicker.

Some of the more advanced ladies invest in golf watches that act as a clicker and can even tell you how far from the hole you are at any given time in addition to easily keeping track of golf swings.

Golf Glove

You will likely want to wear one leather golf glove on the hand that is opposite to the type of clubs you have. If you have righty clubs then a lefty golf glove is the way to go!

Squeeze Bottle Brush

I recently got the Groove Tube Squeeze Bottle Brush that clips onto my golf bag. I put a tiny amount of dish soap in the tube with water and it cleans my golf clubs beautifully.

Golf Rag

If you are playing in semi-wet weather conditions, a golf rag will be helpful to wipe your club of mud or dirt and keep them clean. They typically clip onto the bag.

Tees

Personally, I prefer to bring a pack of 5 Martini Tees rather than the original wooden tees. Reason being is that they don’t break and they hold the ball pretty well. You just have to remember not to leave it behind by accident after teeing off. These can be costly and it’s disappointing when you lose a $2 tee, in my opinion.

Snacks & Water Bottle

Snacks can be helpful like trail mix, nuts, or a bagel if it’s the morning. Some of my golf ladies bring Truly’s along for the game in the bag which can help enhance the game in some ways. I put my Stanley Cup in my golf bag water bottle placement.

What’s in my pocket while I play?

Ball, tee, marker & clicker!

You should be prepared and good to go!
